Naperville Ale Fest

The Naperville Ale Fest will be Naperville's first craft beer festival. As the proud retail sponsor for this event, Peterson Spirits & Fine Wines couldn't be more thrilled! The inaugural festival will take place on Saturday, July 20, 2013. Situated on the grounds of Naper Settlement, with Downtown Naperville as a backdrop, it is the ideal setting to experience craft beer.  The festival will feature over 180 unique beers from craft breweries around the country.

The festival will also feature food from some of Naperville's best restaurants and catering companies. Live music will accompany the craft beer and culinary celebrations, and one can further enhance their craft beer experience by attending one of the home brewing seminars. Most important, this event will raise monies to benefit the Naper Settlement and Naperville Heritage Society. 
 

*To stay in compliance with Illinois liquor law the Naperville Ale Fest will be a ticketed event.  Festival participants will receive 15 drink tickets each.  Each drink ticket can be exchanged for a 3oz sample.  Additional samples are available for $0.50 per ticket.

As a wine industry professional since 1988 and active Chilean importer for the last twenty years, Earle believes Chile is a true viticulture paradise!  Join Earle at Peterson's Chicago Avenue store, Saturday, May 18th as he educates you on Indomita's four tiered line up of wines!

What makes Indomita unique compared to other Chilean Wineries?
 
Indomita Winery unlike many other Chilean operations carries a full breath lineup of wines. With four different ranges of wine from some of the best vineyard sites in Chile, Indomita wines are the epitome of prestige and value. Their Icon wine is Zardoz, the finest Cabernet Sauvignon in Chile. They produce single vineyard wines called Duet which consist of a Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a Cabernet Carmenere blend. Their Gran Reserva is done in a regional manor with Bordeaux varietals coming from Maipo and Burgundian wines from Casablanca. The last tier consists of well-made value priced varietals. The winery is located in Casablanca, Chile which has a climate similar to Burgundy, France. This is one of the many reasons Indomita has the reputation of producing the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in South America. Indomita wines have won countless awards and received great ratings. The current vintage of Zardoz is a Robert Parker 90. The Duet Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and the Cabernet Carmenere blend are all rated 87-89 points by Parker.

Last Saturday night, Peterson's Chicago Avenue store tasted out over 30 wines from Napa and Sonoma, California.  We had an amazing turnout with equally amazing wines competing from the two regions. As promised, our team rallied up the results from Saturday night's purchases and surprisingly, no close calls were made. 1.) 2010 Gundlach Bundschu Sonoma Mountain Cuvee Red Blend $20.99
This reasonably priced blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Malbec is an excellent example of California winemaking. Lots of berry fruit, pepper, earth, spice box and underbrush as well as hints of wood and incense can be found in the aromas and flavors of this medium-bodied, dense ruby/purple-tinged gem.

2.) 2010 Paraduxx C Blend Napa Valley Red Wine $47.99
The nose offers classic Cabernet notes of vanilla and black tea with toasty hints of dark chocolate and tobacco leaf. Though firm on the entry, this wine is rich, ripe and weighty, with lingering flavors of raspberry jam, white pepper, caramel and black tea.

3.) 2010 Cannonball Sonoma Merlot $15.99
Deep garnet color with a bright halo of ruby. The aromas reveal slowly with layers of cherries, floral, and vanilla-creme with a hint of red spice and walnut. In the mouth, the wine announces itself with an enthusiastic entry of cherry, pomegranate, dark berries, and toasty flavors. The body is full and rich, threaded with fine textured tannins.

4.) 2009/2010 Peterson Sonoma Dry Creek Zinfandel $22.99
The 2010 Dry Creek blend is a very classic, claret style Zinfandel. Accompanying the depth of fruit flavors, you'll find richness, complexity, spice and earthiness. Compared to our other Zinfandels, this bottling contains the highest percentage of blending varietals to give maximum spice and an intriguing multifaceted quality without overwhelming the inherent "Zinniness" of the wine. The Petite Sirah gives the wine darker, earth notes and more structure; Carignane enhances the spiciness and bright acidity. The small amount of Grenache brings a little more fruit and richness to the wine.

lamb- are both wine friendly foods, Spring veggies, brunch casseroles and even
chocolate bunnies can make their own matches.

APPETIZERS...

Start guests off with a light white wine that evokes pleasures of Spring. Fresh, zingy New Zealand
Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect pairing for appetizers.

Try ourCloudy Cape Sauvignon Blanc ($10.99) with notes of grass and grapefruit followed by an explosion of citrus that's an incredible value. If you are starting dinner with a salad or Spring veggies, Sauvignon Blanc is also a good match. If you want to to be adventurous, try a staff favoriteBoniface Apremont ($19.99) made with a signature grape known as Jacquere. Delicate and feather light, Boniface offers flavors of honeydew melon, floral and minerality on the finish, perfect alongside almost any appetizer or vegetable food pairings.

THE MAIN MEAL...

A zippy, aromatic riesling is the perfect accompaniment to a glazed ham; the wine's acidity tames the
glaze and it's sweetness matches it. Try the rich and fruity Dr. Loosen Riesling ($13.99) not too dry
and not too sweet! For those who prefer a red wine, try the Lady Slipper Pinot Noir ($21.99).
This Pinot Noir has the most unique fresh fruit approach that will also compliment a glazed ham with cloves.

A Cabernet Franc is an excellent choice with Lamb, with it's complex meaty flavors it is a natural match with red wines. Try the bold and rich Two Mountain Cabernet Franc ($24.99) from Yakima Valley, Washington. This brambly, slightly earthy red is perfectly structured for a roasted lamb.

HOSTING AN EASTER BRUNCH?

Spring Mimosa: Make a fresh strawberry puree by grinding strawberries in a blender and straining them. Mix the puree with a dry sparkling wine (Pierre Delize Sparkling $9.99) and garnish with a fresh strawberry.

Light and delicate Rose's evoke Spring with their signature strawberry aromas. Try our favorite Rose from Languedoc, France, Chateau Lancyre ($19.99) truly one of the best Rose's in the market.

My next favorite morning special is a glass of Prosecco! This light, fizzy, sparkling from Italy is the
perfect brunch wine. In fact, head to Italy and you'll find the local's enjoying a glass of Prosecco in

Greg Gauthier has been blessed with great fortune to work with many talented and inspiring
winemakers. Greg's best advice was given to him by winemaker and close friend Rodney Strong.

"When I was very first dreaming of making my own wine, Rod Strong advised me, "Always put your name
on the label. Some people will think it is because of ego, but that's not it. If your own name is
on the label, you will never take shortcuts- because you would embarrass yourself. Think of
legendary wineries, they were all named after the person who made the wine.

Greg is also the Vice President of Wine Production and Sales for Bouchaine Vineyards, the oldest continually operating winery in Napa's Carnero's region. He works closely with Bouchaine winemaker, Michael Richmond and Consultant Larry Brooks to develop a united vision for their wines. Greg travels widely, tastes extensively and avidly collects "wine wisdom" for Gauthier Cellars.

Miguel Roquette, son of Quinta do Crasto Proprietor Jorge Roquette, is the overseas face for Quinta do Crasto and is responsible for spreading the New Douro gospel. His passion is undeniable and contagious.

The Roquette family's passionate attitude shows in their commitment to maintaining the high quality they have been known for throughout the centuries. Family history at Quinta do Crasto dates as far back as the early seventeenth century, making Quinta do Crasto the oldest port producing winery and the oldest still wine producer in Portugal. Many American wine lovers became familiar with Quinta do Crasto in 2008 when their Old Vine Reserva landed the #3 spot in Wine Spectator's Top 100 wines of the year. This big feat for Quinta do Crasto truly marked the crest of new wave high-quality table wines coming from the historic heartland of Port.

A cult wine? Not yet, but quite likely one in the making. Dave Phinney, the personality and creator behind Orin Swift, is best known for his flagship wine- The Prisoner. Machete, is born out of the wine Dave has been enjoying in the Pyrénées-Orientales of the south of France. This blend is similar to his Abstract, however, there is more influence on the Petite Sirah portion giving this wine the "big brother" status. Machete is a limited production coming from some of our favorite vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino including Dark Horse, Durell, Eagle Point, Fulton, Hudson, Las Madres, and Stones Throw. Low yields and small berries contribute to the concentration and dark inky color. Machete is perhaps one of the most interesting wines from Orin Swift to date, and is worth a taste before it's all gone.

"Beautiful notes of just picked warm, ripe blackberry with licorice and cedar box on the nose. The wine is structured and complex, saturated with smoky, dark, ripe brambly black fruit. It is bright and brooding, rich and powerful showcasing the intensity of Petite Sirah, the elegance and complexity of Grenache with the seriousness of cool climate Syrah."  Dave Phinney, Winemaker

While a member of the San Francisco Fire Department for over 16 years Cecil De Loach, lived a double life. As Cecil was fighting fires and rescuing San Franciscans, he was also helping establish the Russian River Valley as one of California's most famed grape growing regions.


Cecil's history began in 1969 when he purchased his first vineyard site. Over the years, Cecil continued to seek out and plant vineyards until he owned over 900 acres of grapes. His experienced reaches into every corner of the Russian River appellation. In 1975, Cecil established De Loach Vineyards which grew to produce more than 250,000 cases per year. De Loach proved to be instrumental in introducing the name "Russian River Valley" to wine lovers worldwide.

In 2003, Cecil sold the De Loach Vineyards brand, which continues today.  Cecil moved on to found Hook & Ladder Winery in 2004. It would be a smaller project that would allow him to showcase the best of his Russian River Valley estate vineyards.


Hook & Ladder is a family project. With his wife Christine, Cecil works alongside son Michael (pictured to the right), the winery's President and CEO, and his grandson, Josh, who serves as the winery's Chef and works on the Sales team. Hook & Ladder's winemaker, Jason De Loach, produces award-winning wines under the tutelage of his Grandfather, Cecil.
